Do I Need a Generator for My Motorhome?
November 30, 2024 | Nate CordWhether or not you need a generator for your motorhome will mainly depend on whether you’re camping in a location that provides electrical hookups.
If you’re planning to stay in one location without access to electricity for more than one or two nights, then a generator is probably the best bet. In this case a generator would be useful as it will recharge your motorhome’s leisure battery, which will drain when you’re not driving.
You can also use a motorhome generator to power high-powered appliances like microwaves, kettles, and hairdryers, which may not run efficiently on the motorhome’s leisure battery alone.
How to Connect a Generator to a Motorhome
Connecting a generator to your motorhome can be done in a few simple steps:
To begin with, position the generator properly so that it’s upright and not too close to any open windows or where you’ll be sitting. You also don’t want to put the generator in the awning or under the motorhome, as exhaust fumes can be dangerous.
You’ll then need to connect the electric hook up cable to the hookup socket on the side of your motorhome. Then, connect the three-pin plug to the generator, and connect the hookup cable to the other end of the adapter.
Turn the fuel cap vent lever on top of the generator clockwise to the on position, then turn on the engine switch and move the choke lever to the right to the start position. It’s worth noting, however, that some generators may have different steps for starting, so always make sure to check the directions.
Viola! Your generator should now be good to go.
